Itinerary:

Join Urban Adventures for an enlightening walking tour through Old Fadama – a unique community that manages to survive in challenging conditions. As masses of people migrate from rural to urban areas, African cities like Accra reach bursting point and people are forced to live in slum-like areas.

In the morning, meet up with a friendly local guide and head off to the Old Fadama area of Accra. Here, you’ll be able to witness another way of life, with the people who have migrated from the north of the country, in search of a better life. Take the time to learn how the local people go about their trade, using disused machinery, appliances and equipment to their benefit. From old refrigerators to computers, printers, microwaves and industrial machinery, the local community dismantle the appliances, locate the valuable parts and one way or another, find use for them. Whether selling valuable elements or using parts for other appliances, the people here are very industrious at making a living.

Although this practice sometimes poses an environmental hazard, the community has little choice but to do this work, since there is little other work or sources of income available. While on the tour, take the time to ask questions and interact with this special community, who despite extreme hardship, still manage to survive with a sense of pride and humility.

Your trip:

For your Urban Adventure you will be in a small group of a maximum of 12 people.

Tipping:

If you are happy with the services provided by your local guides and drivers a tip - though not compulsory - is appropriate. While it may not be customary to you, it is of great significance to the people who will take care of you during your travels, inspires excellent service, and is an entrenched feature of the tourism industry across many Intrepid Urban Adventures destinations. Please consider this when budgeting for your extra expenses on this tour.
