Itinerary
Starting at the historic Botanic Gardens of Brisbane, we collect our bikes and take a short ride through the Botanic Gardens, and learning a little about their history. We meet the ferry at North Quay, where we board with our bikes for the 20 minute ferry ride to the picturesque University of Queensland campus.
Nestled on a bend in the Brisbane river, it gives us the perfect cycling location in a semi-rural setting where along the route we may have the chance to view some of the native bird and wildlife.
We stop at the point where John Oxley landed, the first European to charter the Brisbane River (in 1823), and was the man sent by Governor Brisbane of New South Wales to find a new penal colony for the worst convict offenders. We then head into the historic campus where we ride past the calming campus lakes.
From here, it’s a short ride to the University of Queensland Art Gallery, an amazing display of modern art where we can meander through the exhibits and ask questions of the knowledgeable local staff. Surrounding the gallery are the historic first buildings of the university from 1910, where we learn a little about the history and the infamous local crime associated with the university.
We then take a short cycle back to the ferry stop, where we again board the ferry back to North Quay. From here we take the short ride back to the Botanic Gardens where we drop off the cycles and end our tour.
