Explore the Oltrarno district and see the workshops of artisans up close. See shoes, jewellery and etchings painstakingly crafted by hand and learn how the skills have been passed down each generation since the Middle Ages.

Itinerary

One of the cornerstones of Florentine culture and identity is the tradition of creating handcrafted, artisinal goods. This tradition has been embedded in the city’s visual and economic history since the Middle Ages and has been handed-down from one generation to the next.

During the course of this walk visit a few characteristic workshops in the Oltrarno district. Where a large percentage of the city’s artisnal shops are located, including: leatherworkers, silversmiths, shoe manufacturers and hat makers. You will have the rare opportunity to peek behind the scenes and watch the artisans at work, using centuries-old tools of the trade. You’ll also learn about the importance of maintaining these precious trades in the face of mass-produced industry.

This tour is aimed at the traveller who is looking to scratch beneath the surface of the city. It is not simply a shopping tour, rather a detailed look at the underbelly of this precious industry and the importance of preserving and promoting this dying art.
