Uncover Santa Barbara’s nautical history while exploring the city’s scenic waterfront. Get acquainted with its past while touring the city’s Maritime Museum and quirky Carriage and Western Art Museum. With the chance to soak up picturesque views while puttering through the harbour and a scenic stroll through an ancient oak forest this is a tour that will unlock the real vistas of the Santa Barbara.

Itinerary

Start the adventure with a tour of the Maritime Museum, where the impressive collection of nautical items tells of Santa Barbara’s long-starring role in California’s nautical history. Take the elevator up to the Outdoor Visitor Centre for a history lesson on the American Indian (Chumash) culture, as well as the Spanish, Mission and American Ranchero periods. Soak up the panoramic views from the outside deck, which stretch from the busy city centre to the scenic harbour.

Climb aboard the historic Lil’ Toot, a bright yellow tugboat that putters around the harbour, and head towards Stearns Wharf. Pass by the city’s collection of boats – from the opulent yachts to the small fishing dinghies - while soaking up harbour side views. Pull into Stearns Wharf, built in 1872, and situated on one of the USA’s top ten beaches. Take in views of the opulent Potter Hotel, which opened in 1902 to welcome California’s new wave of rich tourists. Admire the magnificent hotel entrance, while strolling through the fragrant gardens, which are now open to the public.

Head on to the Carriage and Western Art Museum to learn about this iconic part of American history. See the West’s largest collection of horse drawn vehicles, including plenty of stage coaches, wagons and buggies. Don’t miss the chance to see the silver decorated saddles owned by prominent westerners, including one from former US President Ronald Reagan.

Head away from the waterfront, strolling along the scenic path that winds past Santa Barbara City College. Smell the sweet aroma of jasmine, orange and hyacinth blossoms while walking beneath the shadow of towering trees in the city’s oak forest. Wind back to the Maritime Museum where the adventure comes to an end.
