Join this once-in-a-lifetime experience as you see the Pink City during the brightest time of year: at Diwali! Every year on Amavasya, the 15th day of the dark fortnight of the Hindu month of Ashwin, Diwali is celebrated on a nationwide scale with fireworks, lit lamps, decorated homes, and gatherings with families and friends. And of course, there’s no better time to experience Jaipur’s Diwali celebrations than after the sun has gone down, when you can look around and see the whole city illuminated with bright lights — or look up, and you’ll see a sky filled with fireworks.
Diwali is considered an occasion for visiting temples as well as friends and family, and all day long, the markets are abuzz with people thronging for last-minute shopping on Diwali day. We’re going to get right into the action on this Jaipur tour, by celebrating Diwali the local way, in a local home.
Your Jaipur Diwali tour will kick off once you’re picked up from your hotel in the evening. You’ll be taken to a popular family-run heritage hotel, where our hosts will welcome us inside with a beverage and selection of festive snacks and sweets. Slip off your shoes and enter their home, then dig into these treats, handmade by the members of our host family.
Our hosts will help us get dressed for the occasion — in outfits you’ll get to keep! The women in traditional saris, while the men will adorn turbans and Kurta pyjamas, a typical Rajput attire. Together with the family members and their friends, we’ll then offer prayers to Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, and Lord Ganesha. On the auspicious day of Diwali, the doors and windows of homes and temples are left open to allow prosperity to pass through, so make a wish for capturing your own prosperity on this evening!
You’ll hear the story of Diwali from our hosts and your local guide, and you’ll get to try your hand at making intricate designs on the floor with the coloured powder called rangoli. The women and girls in the group can also have their palms decorated with henna in traditional Indian patterns.
We’ll take a seat for dinner and share an authentic Indian feast with our hosts. You’ll dine on a selection of mouthwatering traditional dishes, followed by Diwali desserts. Then, finally, when darkness falls, we’ll watch the fireworks display that illuminates the skyline of Jaipur.
At the end of the night, we’ll return you to your hotel, filled with plenty of memories to take back home with you!
