Beer Lovers Guide to Melbourne
General Info | Photo Gallery | Traveller FeedbackStarting from the settlement point of Melbourne we discover the city’s steep fascination with beer. One of founding fathers was a publican and we visit the site of the first pub. Peppered along the route we visit a number of establishments to assist in our story. From the oldest pubs in the city that have been whetting the whistles of local residents for over 150 years to some new intimate laneway bars and other venues that all have a focus on Melbourne and Victorian microbreweries.
- Explore the history of beer drinking and pub culture inMelbourne. From the early settlement of the city, the sly grog trade of gold rush Melbourne and the restrictive wartime drinking habits.
- More recently, the city has enjoyed more liberal liquor licensing with an explosion of small and intimate laneway bars and the leading Australian state in the evolving craft beer scene.

We walk to Melbourne’s oldest pub before continuing on to learn about the growing voice of the temperance movement. From early rallies, alcohol bans at football matches and the famous six o’clock swill.
More recently, Melbourne has enjoyed more liberal licensing laws which have spawned the growth of a unique laneway bar scene in the city. We visit a venue which has benefited from these laws and taste another delicious Victorian microbrew beer.
We also visit Melbourne’s most iconic pub with it’s controversial painting and discuss the growing craft beer scene as the well as the dominance of Melbourne’s largest brewery – Carlton United brewery.

Dave was a fantastic enthusiastic knowledgeable guide. The beer lovers tour was like going out worth mates, but with some history thrown in. It was a great start to our stay in Melbourne.
