Itinerary
Fremantle is the port for the city of Perth, which is the capital city of Western Australia, an enormous state that takes up a third of Australia and is 3.5 times bigger than Texas. Originally not of any interest to the British, it was only when French and Dutch explorers started sniffing around that the English decided there should be a colony in the West of Australia.
Fremantle developed into the major port for Western Australia in the late 1890’s to service Perth and its surroundings and opened up a gateway to the world. Millions of migrants have come through the ports of Western Australia, and none more than through Fremantle itself. Major prisons were built and criminal undertones swept Freo in its early days, later a submarine base in WWII and now a major tourist attraction with a funky vibe
Join your local guide at the “Roundhouse” at 10.00am to depart on a walking tour that will take approx 2hr and cover 3km over flat land. Your guide will take you on an exploration of the port city, pointing out landmarks and sharing intriguing stories from Fremantle’s settlement, the sad past of early Aboriginal treatment through to jail breaks and outlaws.
Fremantle is a scenic and beautiful town, but with these stories, the place really comes to life!
