Be tempted by delicious treats at a Jewish delicatessen, step into history books at Pennsylvania’s oldest church, wander through charming streets infused with an Italian heritage, enjoy lunch at a world-renowned market, marvel at intricate mosaic art, soak up bohemian vibes on Philly’s South Street.

Itinerary

Begin your journey at one of the oldest Jewish delicatessens in the city, where you may enjoy breakfast or some of the wonderful treats from the bakery to take with you on the tour.

Leaving here, walk through some of the delightful streets and past local homes of Philly’s Queen Village neighbourhood. There will be a chance to see some of the 3,000 murals that decorate the city before reaching Gloria Dei (Old Swede’s) Church, Pennsylvania’s oldest. At this National Historic Site, learn about both Revolutionary War soldiers and ordinary citizens from colonial times buried in its cemetery, and walk into 300 years of history at this beautiful church.

Next, walk on to the Sparks Shot Tower, America’s first shot factory. After a short break at one of the area’s charming local coffee shops, continue on through the Bella Vista neighbourhood. Here experience Philly’s strong Italian heritage, and if you’re lucky watch a game at a park designated for local bocce leagues. A short stroll from here brings us to the bakeries, spice stores, cafes, Italian food stores and market stalls of the Italian Market.

Take the time to mix with business owners and residents, taste some samples and hear stories of early immigrants to the city. It was also here that Rocky ran through the streets on one of his famous training runs. Take this opportunity to enjoy lunch and shopping at the market.

After lunch walk on to Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens, showcasing the mosaic art of Isaiah Zagar. This amazing place includes a fully mosaiced indoor gallery and a massive outdoor labyrinthine mosaic structure. Finally end the tour on South Street, famous for its bohemian mix of clothes, jewelry, gift and music stores. Stay on after the tour finishes to shop, eat and drink on Philadelphia’s most eclectic street.

Tipping

If you are happy with the services provided by your local guides and drivers a tip - though not compulsory - is appropriate. While it may not be customary to you, it is of great significance to the people who will take care of you during your travels, inspires excellent service, and is an entrenched feature of the tourism industry across many Intrepid Urban Adventures destinations. Please consider this when budgeting for your extra expenses on this trip.

Younger children may find these tours too tiring. We think they are suitable for children over the age of 11, but if in doubt, please contact us.
