Continue on to visit the wonderful indoor mural of Maxfield Parrish and the atrium in the Curtis Building before heading through Washington Square to hear it’s tales of mass graves and ghosts.

At the Pennsylvania Hospital, the oldest such institution in the country, wander through the gardens and see the original hospital buildings. Hear stories about Dr. Physick and his early operating procedures.

For a contrast in history, head to Mother Bethel A.M.E Church founded by Richard Allen in 1794. See its superb sanctuary and fascinating museum, and hear stories of the struggles of early Africans. Wandering through the quiet side streets of Society Hill learn about the Founding Fathers, the Free African Society and early churches. Half way through the tour stop at the house of Dr. Philip Syng Physick, an early pioneer in medical practice and the inventor of the first soda. Here have the chance to drink some soda and taste an early Philadelphia tradition, the Philadelphia Soft Pretzel.

Continuing the tour, visit one of the early markets used by a variety of immigrant communities. Take a detour through the Rose Garden, which is home to the oldest example of a cobblestone street. Enjoy the many differing architectural styles, from colonial and Georgian to Greek revival and 19th century.

The final section of the tour will go past Carpenter’s Hall, site of the first Continental Congress in 1774, the Military Museum, First and Second Banks of the United States and the Merchant’s Exchange. End up at the City Tavern for a chance to taste some of the local ales.

If you are happy with the services provided by your local guides and drivers a tip - though not compulsory - is appropriate. While it may not be customary to you, it is of great significance to the people who will take care of you during your travels, inspires excellent service, and is an entrenched feature of the tourism industry across many Intrepid Urban Adventures destinations. Please consider this when budgeting for your extra expenses on this trip.
