Escape Riga and head beyond the city for an afternoon in the great outdoors, in Kemeri National Park! This swampy seaside area is a place adored by photographers, filmmakers and nature painters, who come to catch inspiration for their next pieces of art. It’s also a popular spot for birdwatchers, as the area is home to nearly 260 species of birds. You can almost always hear at least four different birds calling at the same time.
We’ll start our Kemeri hiking adventure along the shortest of the wooden footbridge trails that weave through the swampy forest. Because of the water that flows to and from the shores, you can’t access this part of the park unless you’re on the raised trails, creating a dreamlike setting as if you're floating over the swamp, while your local guide is telling you all about the swamp's secrets. Our hike will lead us to the healing sulphuric spring, where you’ll learn about the spring’s ancient therapeutic powers and how the mud is still used today in modern medicine.
We’ll then stop for a picnic in the forest — and because we’re getting back to nature, we’re going to make sure your meal is all about nature too! We’re talking about a healthy, vegetarian meal showing off local ingredients. Latvians are true food lovers and your guide will explain to how they mix local products into delicious dishes.
From there, we’ll head to the main destination and a real swamp adventure: the Great Kemeri Bog! Your guide will lead you along the moorland’s trail and share legends with you that have travelled from mouth to mouth for centuries. You’ll also learn about the local flora and fauna of the swamp, and their healing properties.
At the end of it all, we’ll stop to watch the sunset from the bird watching tower before heading back to Riga.
All in all, we’ll hike for about four kilometres, which is only a fraction of this massive park — but enough to give you a taste of the magic to be found here!
