There is only one stop on this very special wine and food tasting experience: our enoteca of choice sits opposite the stunning ruins of Trajan’s Forum, one of the last forums to be built in ancient Rome.
This restaurant is unique in that is run by graduates from the Institute of Hospitality in Trastevere. They work alongside a special co-operative called Men at Work to support the rehabilitation of prisoners from nearby Rebibbia prison.
The program invites prisoners to help maintain the one-hectare kitchen garden within the prison walls, which supplies the enoteca (and a host of other local businesses) with fresh seasonal produce throughout the year.
Prisoners also work in the kitchen within the prison to make artisan food products, many of which you will get to sample on your Rome tour.
The wines you will try have been specially curated for our tour and are amongst the best available in the province of Rome with a focus on organic, indigenous grape varieties.
The cesanese grape variety is a particular highlight as it really can only be found in the hills surrounding Rome and is thought to be one of the oldest vines still in cultivation.
A medley of small bites and delicious local cheeses will perfectly complement the wines that will be served to you. Learn more about local wine and food culture, and how the enoteca is working with the co-operative to run a sustainable business that gives something back to its community.
After the tasting, there will be an opportunity for you to purchase a fine array of foodie gems made by the Rebibbia prison kitchen; think pepperoni jam, frascati pepper-bread, and wine bagels. Any money raised goes directly back into the program.
Once our experience ends, why not check out what else this exciting and imaginative restaurant has to offer? Or if you are looking for other recommendations, your local guide will be very happy to help.
