Your first lesson in living life as a Roman is to sip your coffee the way the Romans do — standing up. We will make our first pit stop on this private food tour at a beautiful historic café with a reputation for roasting the best quality beans from around the world since 1946. Choose between an espresso or a cappuccino with a traditional Tartufo semifreddo (chocolate ice-cream truffle) to accompany it.
High on caffeine, sugar, and the Roman spirit, we will make our way to one of the most famous markets in Rome, the Campo dei Fiori. Here we will admire the colourful displays of fruit and vegetables and meet a local cheese producer who makes the greatest Pecorino cheese ever.
Next up, it is essential that you try some mortadella (a light pink, smooth textured Italian sausage). And what better way to try it than on a pizza, an Italian superstar dish that is loved the world over?! This is not any old pizza though, it’s a pizza bianco. Your immersion into the Italian way of life is progressing nicely…
Now we need a drink, so let's have some wine! White or red, the Lazio region offers great variety. You can decide which of our specially selected bottles you would prefer to taste.
Rome has a great tradition of fried food but Supplì is definitely the king (or should that be emperor?!). Enjoy one of these delicious arancini-style treats in a funky deli/restaurant with a glass of wine in-hand.
Our last port of call is the Jewish neighbourhood, where the local Jewish community has played an essential part in the chequered history of Rome since 1555. More importantly for us, their contribution to the food scene in Rome has been equally as impressive; you will have a chance to salute some of their most loved small bites, such as fried artichokes and stock fish.
We always like to finish on a sweet note, so our final stop will be at a local kosher bakery, run entirely by women. Their most popular bakes are their traditional Jewish biscuits, known as kranz.
By the end of your private tour, you’ll know how to live and eat like a proper Roman! Your guide will be very happy to recommend many more foodie adventures for you to enjoy in and around one of the world’s most beautiful cities. When in Rome, indeed!
