Itinerary:
Although small in size, St Lucia has had a long and fascinating history, so escape the capital to experience some of the key places that have shaped it. Take the coastal road north, snaking through mountain passes, fruit plantations and towering cliffs.
Admire sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean, and try and spot the French island of Martinique on the horizon. Visit some of the small northern villages, stopping to meet the locals and discover rural life. Call into the Marquis Estate, the country’s largest estate that is still a working plantation. Learn about the production of St Lucia's most important export crops - bananas and copra – and learn about what’s been grown in the past.
Head south to Paix Bouche, a small town that is the supposed birthplace of Josephine, the wife of Napoleon Bonaparte. Next, weave through the suburbs of Castries, the capital city of St Lucia, before taking the windy road to the summit of Morne Fortune.
Admire the breathtaking views from the summit, and learn about the history of this spot which was originally a fort constructed by the French and captured by the British in the 18th century. Wander among the original buildings and soak up the panoramic views that take in the harbour and Pigeon Point.
Continue the drive, heading down into the Roseau Valley, an area that is home to the island’s largest banana plantation. From here it’s onto spectacular Marigot Bay, which is surrounded on three sides by steep, emerald-coloured hills, and is often described as the most beautiful bay in the Caribbean
Head back to the centre of Castries, calling into the Animation Centre to view the ‘Iyanola Experience’. This interactive display offers a chronological account of St Lucia's colonial past, reliving the island’s key historical events that have taken place in many of the sites we’ve just visited.
This is the ideal place to end the tour and is sure to leave you with a thorough understanding of the events that have shaped this fascinating island.
