Join us for a casual meet-up starting at Jiao Tong University. From there, we’ll take a short wander around the centre of the Former French Concession, famous among locals for its history and beauty, with gorgeous tree-lined avenues perfect for long walks. Along the streets are beautiful lane houses, villas, and art deco mansions mixed with Chinese local shops and restaurants. There is so much history behind the beauty, as the Former French Concession was an area for gangsters, corrupt politicians, and gambling houses, but also for influential individuals in China’s history. Our walk will be along the historic Ferguson Lane, also known as Wu Kang Road.
You’ll see the Normandie Apartments, now known as the Wu Kang Mansions, designed by Hungarian-Slovak architect Lazio Hudec and built to look similar to New York’s flatiron building. These apartments have housed many celebrities over the years. There are plenty of houses that have been converted into museums along Ferguson Lane, and while they won’t be open during our walk, we’ll point them out so you’ll know where to go back and explore more during your time in Shanghai.
We’ll stroll along Ferguson Lane until we reach Fu Xing Zhong Lu. After a few more steps we’ll stop at local brewhouse famous for its Chinese brewed drafts.
This is one of the only pubs that serves Chinese brewed beers, with over 42 different taps. There are several drafts brewed in Nanjing by Master Gao, “China’s Beer Guru,” including the famous Baby IPA. We’ll settle in for a drink if you like (at your own expense but your local friend can give you some recommendations and tips on how to order) and you’ll be free to chat with new friends, make some plans together for later on, and ask any questions you like of our knowledgeable Shanghai expert. What’s even better is that it’s happy hour until 8pm (EVERY SINGLE DAY)! Be warned that on Fridays and Saturdays, there might be a crowd — but a crowd just means more fun, right?!
Think of it as a tour, meet-up, and info desk all rolled into one — get the tips you need to know from those who are in-the-know, then kick back and relax with some new friends in a new city. There’s no better way to tap into local life in Shanghai!
Inclusions: Local English-speaking expert to answer all your questions.
Exclusions: Transportation to and from the meet-up point, food and drinks.
Dress standard: Please wear comfortable shoes for walking. The brewery has a casual dress code; however, there is a more stylish bar that we may wish to visit on Friday and Saturday nights. Come dressed for a casual, but nice evening out.
Your Trip: As this is a meet-and-greet with other travellers and not a standard tour, the size of the group may be more than our typical Urban Adventures limit of 12 people.
Confirmation of booking: “Locals on Tap” tours are meet-up experiences and therefore require a minimum of four (4) people to be booked on any given tour. Should there be fewer than four (4) travellers booked on your chosen date, you will be notified by email two (2) days prior to the date of your booked tour and provided alternative tour options. Otherwise if you don't hear from us and have your voucher, your booking is confirmed. We'll see you at the meeting point. Get in touch if you have any concerns or require more information via the email address or phone number (business hours only) on your voucher.
Child Policy: Travellers under 21 years of age are not permitted to join this experience.
