The most mysterious place in Split is an ancient world underground — but you don’t need to be a professional archaeologist or speleologist to see it!
The ancient Romans knew that clean water was the most important component for a healthy life. And the powerful Diocletian could not have had his luxurious palace without an abundant water supply — it wasn’t just for drinking and bathing, but also for watering his vegetable garden, which was his pride and joy.
Enter: the Diocletian Aqueduct! Built at the end of the 3rd century to provide water to the majestic Palace of Emperor Diocletian, the aqueduct carried water from the Jadro River, some nine kilometers away.
On this tour, we’ll take you alongside and inside the ruins, so you can see up-close this amazing example of Roman hydro-engineering. We'll put on the waders, don our helmets, and climb down the steep, ancient stairs, leading to about 15 metres underground.
The construction is particularly impressive when you realise that the water ran for over nine kilometers and continuously flowed on the three-degree slope, regardless of the terrain. Plus, remember that this was all hand-dug, and parts of the underground sections pass through rocky ground — it really is a marvel you’ll need to see in-person to believe!
Note that this tour goes underground and into tight, dark spaces. As such, it may not be suitable for anyone with claustrophobia or similar fears.
