Trip Code:RUUD Group size:Minimum 1, Maximum 12 Style:History & Heritage, Local Life & Culture

Discover stories of the Russian aristocracy on a visit to two former summer imperial residences, Tsarskoe Selo and Pavlovsk. Classically stylish, Pavlovsk is surrounded by the largest landscape park in Europe. In contrast to Pavlovsk is opulent Tsarskoe Selo, home to the stunning baroque Catherine Palace with its renowned Amber Room.

Itinerary

After St Petersburg became the new Russian capital in 1712, imperial palaces and parks started to appear around the new city. On this guided tour visit two such places, Tsarskoe Selo and Pavlovsk. During the day discover the histories of these estates, and be treated to a traditional Russian degustation lunch.

Tsarskoe Selo was given to Catherine I, as a gift from Peter the Great. When their daughter Elizabeth I inherited Tsarskoe Selo, she treated it with special affection and named the palace she commissioned to be built after her mother. Catherine Palace is a fine example of baroque reconstruction. Visit the grand staterooms including the breathtaking Amber Room, where the walls are lined with mosaic amber panels of various colours and shades.

Continue on to Pavlovsk, located on the banks of the picturesque Slavyanka River. Pavlovsk was an imperial residence for a short period of time. In 1777 Catherine II presented the estate to her son, Grand Duke Paul and his wife Maria on the birth of their first son Alexander. During the brief reign of Paul I the suburban mansion became an official residence of the Imperial family.

The palace was built there in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the time when Classicism developed as the leading arts style in Russia. It is considered one of the most exquisite residences in the suburbs of St Petersburg, and one of the finest examples of this classical style in Europe. The collection of statues here is only second to the collection at the Hermitage Museum. Pavlosk Palace is set in the largest landscaped park in Europe, and has numerous pavilions scattered throughout it.

After an exciting day of sightseeing head back to St Isaac’s Square where this tour will come to an end.
