The Mapuche are the largest indigenous group in southern Chile, renowned for their textile artistry. On this Temuco tour, you’ll have the chance to discover the artistic heritage, taste traditional dishes, and learn about the daily life and customs of the Mapuche.
This experience is run in partnership with Fundación Chol-Chol, a non-profit organisation that promotes the sustainable economic development of over 100 indigenous Mapuche artisans and craftsmen. The foundation is dedicated to promoting ethical, fair trade handicrafts in Arauncancia, Chile.
You’ll learn about traditional Mapuche textiles that are being produced according to fair trade criteria. You’ll see a demonstration of the process from a master weaver, who will create the distinctive, exotic Mapuche patterns before your eyes with a spindle, plant-dyed fabrics and a witral loom.
From there, you’ll get to immerse yourself in the culture and daily life of the Mapuche people as you learn about their culture, religious beliefs, customs and ceremonies. You’ll visit a ruka, which is the traditional straw hut of the Mapuche, built with a unique cone shape.
You’ll also get a literal taste of Mapuche culture as you share meals made from recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation, all with local and organic produce grown by a rural family.
Finally, you’ll put your own artistic skills to the test as you make a piece of pottery alongside a skilled artisan in the Mapuche tradition. You’ll also visit the regional museum to see original ancient pottery.
