Itinerary

After only about 10 minutes drive we get to Devrent valley where we first meet the lunar landscape of Cappadocia. Set out on a 20 to 25 minutes hike starts after some explanation from our local guide about the history, culture and geological formations of Cappadocia.

Continue to Pasabag valley which is one of the most unique places of Cappadocia with its rock formations beyond belief.

Visit the abondened Cavusin old city with its cave mosque, cave pigeon houses, cave church, cave houses etc. Everything in Cavusin used by people was carved into the rocks.

Avanos, centre of terracotta work of art since 3000 BC will be our next stop where we can visit a traditional pottery workshop to watch a demonstration how local people making pottery still with the old techniques.

What makes this tour so unique and special is that guests can try to make their own clay pot if they wish to with the local craftsmen to guide them. By participating this ancient craft, guests are enabling this ancient tradition to continue and for the craftsmen to continue their work in a day where modern practises have seen the old ways slowly disappear.

We will have local lunch in a cave restaurant typical to Cappadocia. It is used to be the refectory of an early Christian monastery. The restaurant is most famous for its "manti" (Turkish ravioli) and "bulgur corbasi" (wheat soup). There is also a "tandir" (Tandoori Oven) in the restaurant where you can watch the ladies as they make tandoori bread here. A great way for guests to feel part of the local culture and support the local business from which the food is produced and supplied.

In the afternoon, we visit the famous Göreme Open Air Museum to see the best examples of Byzantine art in Cappadocia. The rock-cut churches and monasteries with frescoes and paintings.

We are ending our day with short stops at the Uchisar and Pigeon Valley and Esentepe where we can taste the Turkish Tea while enjoying the stunning view of Goreme Valley.

Dress Standard

Please be aware that the standard of Dress through out Turkey is conservative. To respect this and for your own comfort we recommend modest clothing. This means clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. Turkish people do not wear shoes within the home so we suggest easy slip on shoes be worn. The weather in Turkey is highly variable depending on the time of year. Winters range from freezing cold to extremely hot and humid in Summer (June, July and August). Please note that short shorts for both men and women are not acceptable nor are tank or singlet tops.

Tipping

If you are happy with the services provided by your local guides and drivers a tip - though not compulsory - is appropriate. While it may not be customary to you, it is of great significance to the people who will take care of you during your travels, inspires excellent service, and is an entrenched feature of the tourism industry across many Intrepid Urban Adventures destinations. Please consider this when budgeting for your extra expenses on this trip.
