LivelyHoods Kenya is a non-profit social enterprise that creates training and livelihoods opportunities for disadvantaged youth and women in urban slums. LivelyHoods trains youth and women in sales, marketing, and communication skills, and provides them with the products and support for them to thrive as sales agent of life-changing clean-energy products such as cookstoves.
You will arrive at LivelyHoods HQ at 8am for the morning energising session in Kawangware, Nairobi. This briefing session will allow you to meet and mingle with young people who have undergone LivelyHoods training on communications and sales skills, and left behind a life of unemployment, idleness, and desperation.
You will start the day as Livelyhoods youth do every by, by celebrating successes as a group, and encouraging each other to always do better each day, and to learn something new. You’ll learn about LivelyHoods’ work to lift youth and women out of poverty and create sustainable change in low-income communities.
Kawangware is the city’s second biggest slum, with a population of 800,000 people, and a huge proportion of young men and women who are living in poverty, and unable to access sustainable income-generating activities. Unemployment is almost inevitable for young people, with up to 70% unable to find jobs to support themselves and their families.
You’ll learn how we congratulate success at LivelyHoods, how we distribute products, and how every young person working with LivelyHoods makes the most of their day and the opportunity to earn an income. You’ll have a light traditional breakfast of tea and chapati with the LivelyHoods group before setting off on your street smart adventure, with a group of LivelyHoods youth.
You’ll tread the streets of Kawangware and witness life in the fast lane in Nairobi’s informal settlements. As you go, you’ll bring clean energy products and life-saving information about how households can protect their families from indoor air pollution, how they can save money by using less fuel and fewer candles, and how they’ll have more time if they use more efficient cooking and lighting products.
LivelyHoods will ensure you have water throughout your visit, but please bring a re-usable bag so you can carry it with you. You’ll stop for a soda or a tea in the heart of Kawangware, and get to chat to locals who have spent their lives in the informal settlements of Nairobi and have plenty of stories to tell.
The aim of the game is to help LivelyHoods sales agents sell their energy products, such as clean cookstoves. In doing so, you won’t just be helping the community and a local family to have cleaner air, but also helping theses agents to directly provide for themselves and their families.
Early afternoon you’ll return to HQ with your LivelyHoods guides for a homecooked lunch of spicy pilau with indigenous vegetables, or mukimo (ground vegetables, maize, beans, and potato), with stewed beef or vegetables — a local specialty that will replenish your energy! You’ll also learn more about the history of LivelyHoods, and how it’s already changed the lives of more than 1,000 young people across Kenya, and brought improved health and quality of life to over 15,000 Kenyan homes through life-changing products. You’ll get to meet the team that makes it happen, almost all of whom are young people from the slums who have worked their way up to management level, and now take ownership over a project that continues to change the lives of young people in their communities.
The group that has made the most sales and spoken to the most people will win a prize (visitors and LivelyHoods youth included) and we’ll spare a short moment to celebrate everyone who helped to make a difference in Kawangware that day — including you!
You’ll be dropped off at your hotel or accommodation by private taxi, and we hope you’ll share your photos with us, and keep in touch with LivelyHoods and the young people who you’ve helped learn and grow.
