We will meet you in Antigua and drive for one hour to Guatemala City, where we’ll start our tour by exploring the geographic heart of the city.
El Obelisco on Refoma Avenue is the centre of the city, and residents from all over Guatemala City enjoy their Sundays here, working out or just having fun outdoors with their family. Every other day of the week it is congested with traffic but on Sundays cars are banned so that locals have the opportunity to experience the delights of the area.
Strolling down Reforma Avenue, we will observe many of Guatemala’s most important national monuments, including a statue of Miguel Angel Asturias, one of the country’s treasured sons who won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1967.
We will then hop on the new Trans Metro and make our way over to the historic city centre.
Before reaching the centre, we will make a couple of stops to admire the Torre del Reformador, the National Theatre, and the modernist Civic Center, as well as many of the marvellous murals created in this part of the city by renowned artists in the 1950s and ‘60s.
Lunch is next on the agenda, in a local’s favourite restaurant in the old part of town, washed down with an ice cold beer if you like. (Please note that lunch and beverage will be at your own expense.)
Our last stop is La Sexta, one of the most popular places to promenade in the city, particularly on Sundays. Culture and commerce form a heady and vibrant mix here.
We will stop to appreciate the many different kinds of architecture that’s proudly on display, including some stunning art deco buildings.
The tour ends in the Main Plaza where there is a buzzing Sunday market offering handicrafts, colourful textiles, and plenty of fresh produce straight from the rich soil of Guatemala.
After you have done some souvenir shopping at the market, our shuttle will whisk our visitors from Antigua back to their base. Don’t forget to ask your local guide for more tips on where to go and what else to see during your Guatemalan adventure.
