Any British seaside town worth its (sea) salt had a pier back in Queen Victoria’s day, and Brighton’s Pleasure Pier is billed as the finest one ever built. It is here we will begin our journey as you enjoy sweeping views down the coast and see if you can spot one of the largest marina complexes in Europe.
A gentle stroll along the promenade leads us to the scene of the famous clash between Mods and Rockers in the early ‘60s that inspired The Who’s Quadrophenia rock opus. Then, our next stop is Kemptown, a lively part of town that features heavily in the local LGBT scene. Very bohemian in character, it is an area awash with exciting new shops, bars, and cafés opening all the time.
Down the old Steine thoroughfare, we’ll tick off historical homes, fountains, and war memorials before arriving at the gloriously over-the-top Royal Pavilion. After a pleasant walk through the pavilion gardens, titillated by stories of Royal romance and adultery, we’ll move on to trendy North Laine to check out the famous backstreets and maybe stop for a quick drink and a bite to eat, if you fancy it.
Journeying further through the labyrinth of lanes we will stop at a proper British pub and admire the art deco Hippodrome building, where The Beatles and The Stones once played before they were famous.
No trip to the seaside is complete without an ice cream, and boy do we have an ice cream for you! Award-winning and made locally, this gelato is pure heaven.
Finally, we’ll head back down to the beach, ice creams in-hand.
