Your Bucharest Christmas markets tour will start with a short introduction to our history and the city, but also with some stories about local winter celebrations.
We’ll then head to our first Christmas market to start the festive exploring. Here you’ll learn about how the Christmas tree was brought to our country by the royal family (with time to take photos in front of the tree). We’ll also drink our first hot drink of the day, either mulled wine or hot apple juice, and accompany it with a homemade chocolate bar.
We will continue with a walk through the Old Town where we will discover a very nice Christmas flea market inside the former Stock Exchange Palace. We will then walk along Lipscani street, one of the most famous streets during the medieval period, with a stop at Carturesti Carusel, one of the most beautiful bookshops the world!
Our tour will continue with visits to three amazing inns from the 19th century. In the past, it was here that goods and gifts for Christmas ware sold by merchants coming from Western Europe.
Next, we will take the most famous communist boulevard toward the second Christmas Market to admire the flamboyant light displays, but also to discover how Christmas was celebrated during communism when Santa Claus was abolished and “Old Man Frostie” (a communist invention) was put in his place.
Antim Monastery is next, one of the most beautiful and quiet places in town, a place with a history going back more 300 years. Here we will discover the connection Romanians still have to religion and what the birth of Jesus means to them.
The last stop will be the biggest Christmas market in Romania. Local craft shops will tempt you with their authentic handmade products, clothes, ceramics, wooden spoons, and jewellery. This is also where you’ll find vendors selling traditional food and drinks. As we explore the last market, we will grab a traditional Christmas sweet and another hot wine or hot tea to keep warm.
