Your tour begins at Budapest’s Central Market Hall (we will not enter the Market Hall but if you have time, we recommend that you arrive early and allow yourself at least 30 minutes to walk around amongst the stalls). Instead of doing the usual tourist route, we’ll take you off the beaten track right away for a visit to a small workshop where the products are designed with recycling in mind. You will be amazed how the artists here re-use old Molino adverts to create new works of art.
We’ll then take a wander towards one of Budapest’s most popular shopping streets but we’ll skip all the touristy souvenir shops and instead we’ll track down some of our favourite Hungarian designers for a very special and personalised experience.
You’ll have an opportunity to try on (and buy if you wish) some hilarious, handmade hats located in a tiny, practically invisible shop off the main street. Then just around the corner we’ll enter another small boutique selling intricate, handmade fabrics and another that specialises in jewels and jewellery.
Next up, we’ll hop on a tram, taking the line that boasts beautiful views of the river, the historic castle area and the impressive Parliament building. We’ll arrive at a charming but little-known neighbourhood of Budapest called Lipótváros, which offers a completely different atmosphere with its beautiful Bauhaus buildings and small shops that are loved by locals.
After getting off the tram, we’ll check out a beauty shop. But this one is not just for the ladies; the gents will find some special organic products that we are certain they’ll love. From soaps and facial creams to lip balms, make-up and aftershave there is a wide selection of locally made products for you to choose from.
After we’ve had a browse around the beauty store, we’ll stop for a Hungarian savoury scone (yum!) to keep those energy levels up and chat about the history of the district.
We’ll then continue towards a delightful porcelain shop that won a gold medal at the 1878 World Expo in Paris, while its owner won the French Legion of Honor! Should you wish to have a piece on your shelf, shipping won’t be a problem — you are in good hands!
Have you ever heard of organic clothing? If yes, you’ll be pleased to discover the store of a Hungarian designer friend of ours who is on a mission to ensure that each and every step of the manufacturing process is free of chemicals and that everything that is used to make up the clothes originates from Hungary.
On our way to our final stop of the afternoon, you will see some lovely local eateries, a wine shop and a small Hungarian ice cream shop which we thoroughly recommend you visit once we have parted ways.
Our fabulous shopping tour will come to an end at a lovely little coffeehouse that’s so different from any of the others in Budapest and, rather conveniently, it's located in a particularly scenic area of the city, too. Before saying goodbye to your guide, there will be time to experience Hungarian flavours with a coffee and a slice of cake. Don’t forget to ask for tips on what else there is to see, do and eat during your stay in our wonderful city.
