Canberra is surrounded by national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and a range of stunning short walks. The best time to meet the local wildlife is early morning, late afternoon, or just after sunset. We can organise a nature and wildlife trip that suits the time you have available and the level of adventure you desire.
Your trip could include:
· Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve in the early morning (we suggest a 7am to 8am pick up for the 45 minute drive south of Canberra). Enjoy the crisp morning air and easy walks to meet kangaroos, koalas, platypus and other wildlife enjoying their morning snacks before the people arrive. This is also the best time to experience the reserve's birdlife. The park visitor centre has a small cafe to enjoy a fine coffee and snacks in the sunshine after these short walks.
· Mulligans Flat Sanctuary (30 minute drive north of Canberra city). Take an easy after sunset twilight walk to spot some noctural Aussie animals like bettongs (mini kangroos) and sugar gliders (head torches provided). After your twilight walk we can drop you off at a recommended Canberra restaurant so you can savour the experience over dinner. Allow about 2.5 hours with pick up 30 minutes before sunset.
· Tidbinbilla Plus - After an easy sanctuary walk to meet the kangaroos and koalas, why not add a guided walk into the peaks around the nature reserve such as the Mountain Creek circuit (2 hours) or an epic climb up to Gibraltar Peak (4 hours). These walks will get the heart pumping in the clear mountain air. Take in the tall forests, expansive views over the valley, and lots of birdlife. This is best done in the morning - we suggest a 7am to 8am pick up at your accommodation.
· Namadgi National Park (60-90 minutes south of Canberra city). Venture deeper into the mountains of this huge national park south of Canberra to see an Aboriginal rock art shelter or enjoy one of the scenic walks through tall forests, mountain wetlands, or up to a rocky granite peak for expansive views. This is best done as an all day adventure with a healthy, energy-packed lunch.
