After fitting you with a life vest, helping you get to know how easy it is to use the kayak pedal drive system, and a safety briefing, we set off for a relaxing kayak cruise of western Lake Burley Griffin.
The direction we go depends a little on how the weather conditions that day and what you want to see or experience. Your guide will let you know the options…it is a big lake.
On our relaxing circuit around the lake you can experience:
- The freedom and serenity of the lake – with the afternoon light dancing across the water.
- The amusing antics of the water birds diving into the lake for fish, and ducking for cover in the reeds – and at some times of the year, raising their chicks at the waters’ edge;
- The majestic background of Canberra’s surrounding forested peaks and mountain ranges, with just a few of our iconic national buildings poking their noses above the lake edge forests;
- The sail boats, rowers and dragon boat paddlers practicing their skills;
- A short break on a lake island and/or a sandy lakeside beach to explore a bit and take it all in.
About our kayaks:
Thanks to millions of years of penguin fin evolution and a few smart guys at Hobie, the kayak pedal-drive system (or Mirage drive as Hobie calls it) propels you through the water with ease – using your leg muscles, not your arms. Our kayaks also come with the new very comfy adjustable “Vantage” seats. Add in a very stable boat design, fingertip rudder control, dry hatches to store jumpers, cameras, phones… and kayaking was never made easier. It is hands-free, and the easiest way to get around on water with human power!
Expect to get your feet wet getting in and out of the kayaks. (We can lend you some special “wet feet” shoes and socks – washed every night). And hey, its Canberra – it can get cold any time of year, especially on the water, so do bring a warm jumper, warm headwear or scarf if cold or windy, and a sunhat and sunscreen if sunny. Sunglasses are very useful.
In severe weather we may cancel the tour if it is deemed by the tour leader to be too risky at the time of departure. In this case we will offer to reschedule you on the next available tour, provide credit for another tour, or give you a refund.
Inclusions: Local English-speaking guide, pedal kayak hire with life vest (personal flotation device).
Exclusions: Drinks, food, souvenirs and personal shopping, tips/gratuities for your guide.
Dress standard: Bring adequate clothing for the conditions, especially to stay warm on colder days when out on the water. (Clothing can be stored in dry hatches on the kayaks). A hat (with chin strap to stay on if windy), some sunglasses, a dab of sunscreen, and a small water bottle are handy.
Expect to get your feet wet, up to about shin height, getting in and out of the kayaks. If you require it we can lend you some special footwear for getting wet feet and you can store your shoes or sandals in the kayak dry hatch.
If you bring your camera or phone on board the kayak, it’s best to attach a cord so you don’t accidentally drop it overboard and watch it sink to the depths for the fish to figure out if they can use it.
