The annual Enlighten Festival is where Canberra shakes it down and comes alive at night. This year, for the first time, you can take in the whole of this magical light festival by gliding around the lakeside cycle paths and up Capital Hill on an easy-to-use electric bike light machine.
Check out the whole program for the Enlighten Festival here: http://enlightencanberra.com/.
There is limited parking near Enlighten so we would recommend catching a bus and arriving early for first choice at the noodle market. This way you will be more relaxed and won’t risk being late for the e-bike ride!
The electric bike trips start and finish right at the centre of the illumination action and next to the pop-up night noodle market in front of Questacon (the science and technology museum), which overlooks the central lake.
Before or after the bike tour, you can grab a bite to eat and walk amongst the grand national buildings lit up with projected illuminations. Or wander amongst a glowing landscape of musical cocoons, or be swallowed by a giant glowing angler fish.
Then ride away from the crowds on your electric bike light machine, gliding off into the night to see the city lights leap into the sky and reflect across the water from a range of top vantage points that most tourists won’t know about.
The journey itself will add to the light show — with the LED lit-up e-bikes flashing away as vibrant beacons, we’ll wind our way around the lakeside cycle paths and up to Capital Hill where we’ll pause to take in the epic light-filled vista across the city.
Your local guide may vary the route each night to take in a different festival event or two — which come and go in a flash like the photons themselves. There is plenty of opportunity on the ride to pause and soak up the sights along the way.
So don’t get lost in the crowds. Join a local guide to explore the best the Enlighten Festival has to offer!
