Lonely Planet Experiences Private Dubrovnik Tour: Early Morning Sightseeing
Dubrovnik, Croatia
Culture shock rating
Worried we’re going to shock your senses? Relax! We believe part of the fun of travel is immersing yourself in the destination and its culture, meeting the people, and learning what makes the place tick. We’ve got a wide range of tours with something for everybody. The cultural shock rating ranks how different the experience is from most Western cultures. But no matter the level, don’t worry, you’ll have a local, in-the-know guide with you every step of the way.
Low
Consider these tours your 101 intro to a place. Transportation might be private or a very comfortable public option, and the activities are usually visits to iconic sites and locations that are familiar to most Western cultures – but that will still give you fantastic insight into a destination.
Medium
Expect to rough it for parts of this tour, whether that’s on a packed public bus or in a local market off the tourist trail. There might be a few language barriers or unfamiliar cultural customs, and you’ll get an experience different from what you're used to at home.
High
You're out there in the global community! We’re going to take you down streets you’d rarely explore on your own, introduce you to local customs and languages, and take you for a ride in whatever transport is available. Get ready to take it as it comes, whatever comes. There might be a shock, but oh man, it’s worth it.
Physical rating
Worried our tours are too tough? Relax! From leisurely strolls to muscle-burning treks, we’ve got a wide range of tours with something for everybody. The physical grading gives you an idea of how much huffing and puffing you can expect on the tour.
Low
Slow and steady is all you need here. These tours have very limited physical activity, such as walking relatively flat streets, sites, or markets, and climbing in and out of the transport provided.
Medium
Not too hard, not too soft, these tours are just right! You can expect a bit of physical activity, but nothing overly challenging – perhaps walking up and down hills, riding a bike for up to 30 kilometers along mostly flat terrain, or jumping in a kayak for a gentle paddle on flat water.
High
Get ready for a workout! These tours are our most challenging and involve intense walking, hiking, kayaking, swimming, or bike riding. You could be making steep climbs by foot or pedal, or working your core in the water. We recommend you have a good level of fitness to join this tour.

Your private tour will begin near the Ploče gate and, after a brief introduction to the city and its history from your local guide, we will take a leisurely stroll through the walled city of Dubrovnik, highlighting the main historic and cultural sights as we go.
Our first stop will be in front of the imposing Revelin Fortress on Arms Square; here we will talk about how the city came to be built and why it was essential to fortify it. While you’re listening, you’ll be able to take some swoon-worthy shots of the old port.
Next, we’ll take a stroll down St. Dominik street, stopping outside the delightfully gothic Dominikan monestary, featuring one of the biggest gothic churches on the Adriatic coast. Within these sacred walls is a rare collection of Renaissance artworks that not many people know about.
As we walk towards the port, your guide will regale you with tales about the thriving naval trade which became one of the main contributing factors to Dubrovnik’s immense wealth. We will pass by the city’s stunning cathedral, which just so happens to be the birthplace of the original city. Then we will show you arguably the most beautiful of the palaces located within the city walls — the Rector’s Palace.
We’ll continue down some mesmerising side streets connected to the market, where we’ll spend some time reflecting on what daily life looked like during Dubrovnik’s heyday in the 15th and 16th centuries. We’ll admire the Orthodox Church which has recently become an unofficial sanctuary for the city’s stray cats.
Our next stop is one of Dubrovnik’s most famous landmarks, Onofrio’s fountain. Incredibly, Dubrovnik was one of the first cities in Europe to give fresh water to its citizens and to build a working sewage system. You can fill up your water bottle with pure spring water from the nearby Šumet spring while you’re here.
The spectacular Franciscan monastery, one of the oldest buildings in a city full to the brim with old buildings, is next. Amazingly it houses one of the oldest, continually in-use pharmacies in Europe.
Heading down Stradun now, one of the city’s most famous streets (you may have seen it in a tiny show called Game of Thrones?!). We will end up on Luza Square with some scintillating tales about some of the landmarks in front of you; Orlando’s Column, St Blaise Church and Sponza Palace.
Our final stop will be the city's green market, and boy do we have a treat for you, we’ll chow down on local candied orange peels, sugar-coated almonds and a whole host of exceptional dried fruits, chatting to the locals as we do so. Here we will also grab coffee at one of our favorite local places. There are some great breakfast options here too, so feel free to stay on and grab yourself a delicious early morning snack, you have earned it!
This is where we part ways but before you go, don’t forget to tap up your guide for all the current goings-on in the city and for recommendations of what else to see and do while you’re here.
