You’ll meet your local guide in front of Mercado del Puerto, located about a 15-minute walk from the port, which serves as a farmers’ market during the day and turns into a vibrant street food spot in the evenings.
From our meeting spot we’ll take a walk to one of the oldest breakfast cafes in town, located in La Isleta, a very local neighbourhood. Here we’ll taste some typical Canario breakfast dishes, one sweet and one savoury. As you dig in, you’ll learn about an ingredient which helped shape not only the local cuisine, but also Canarian history.
Next we’ll visit a fruteria, a small shop where locals buy fruits and vegetables right from the island’s farmers. Try one of the locally grown fruits like tuno (a cactus fruit), Canario banana, papaya, mango or another fruit that’s currently in season. Find out what plants grow on the island, and how they’re used in Canario cuisine.
Then we’ll stop by a market to learn about the wide variety of Canario cheeses, and try one of the most famous varieties.
Our next stop will be a local cafe to try arepas, a very popular South American street food, and learn about the historical bonds and cultural exchanges between the Canary Islands and North America.
Finish your food discovery tour with a local version of coffee that lands on the sweeter side; it’s a type of coffee you won’t find anywhere outside of Gran Canaria.
Our tour ends in Santa Catalina Park, a famous park where all the major city celebrations take place, which is located next to the port. Feel free to continue exploring, or ask your guide for even more things to see, do and (most importantly) eat in the area.
