Our first stop on your Hue Village Discovery tour will be a visit to a unique bamboo paper workshop, about a 15-minute drive from your hotel pick-up. Taking his inspiration from bamboo, Phan Hai Bang has spent 10 years researching and creating high-quality papers featuring original designs that celebrate Vietnamese culture. You’ll learn how bamboo paper is developed and used in different pieces of functional art such as conical hats, umbrellas, lamps, fans, postcards, wallets, and more.
Driving back towards the imperial city (about 10 minutes or so away), we will visit a Hue traditional cultural house, where you will gain a deeper understanding of traditional handicrafts. You will have an opportunity to have a go at making a beautiful lotus flower with a real craftsperson there to guide you, for the perfect souvenir handmade by you.
Our next stop will be the ancient village of Thuy Bieu, on the banks of the Perfume River, some eight kilometres from the city centre (about a 20-minute drive). Here, we will take a peek inside a famous pomelo garden house that was once a regular haunt for the royal family, before taking a relaxing stroll through its delightful fruit garden.
We will then hop on our bikes for a jaunt around Thuy Bieu, stopping off to visit a local family making votive papers and/or a village community temple. If you are uncomfortable riding a bike, you can skip this part and instead soak your feet in a herbal tub in the family’s soothing, shaded fruit garden.
In need of some delicious treats to refuel, we’ll go back to the local family’s home and make our own sesame candy — a sugary delight with a Vietnamese twist. You can, of course, sample the sweets of your labour, alongside a cup of fresh green tea (sometimes with seasonal garden fruits) and a bit of ginger candy.
Our Hue tour comes to an end at noon, when we will head back to the city centre. Before you say goodbye, though, be sure to ask your local guide for insider tips on where to go for lunch.
