From Jaipur, we will drive in a private vehicle to Agra, a timeworn city located on the banks of the sacred Yamuna River.
For starters, we’ll visit the stunning Fort at Agra, a UNESCO World Heritage site and architectural wonder built by Emperor Akbar way back in the 16th century. A perfect blend of Islamic and Hindu architecture, this red sandstone and marble fortress is more of a palatial city in miniature than a fort.
There is much to explore here; we will make a beeline for the Sheesh Mahal or Glass Palace, a royal dressing room adorned by tiny mirror-like glass-mosaic decorations on the walls. We will then take a stroll around the Anguri Bagh, which houses a whopping 85 geometrically perfect gardens.
No visit is complete without a trip to the Nagina Masjid, literally meaning Gem Mosque. This exquisitely beautiful place of worship was designed exclusively for the ladies of the court.
After all that walking and gazing in wonder, it’s time to get a bite to eat from a nearby local restaurant. Your guide can help you to choose an authentically Mughlai dish. Mughlai cuisine is wonderfully reflective of the region’s fascinating history, combining Persian influences such as nuts and dried fruits with aromatic North Indian spices.
After lunch we will make our way to one of the most famous sites on the planet, the one you have been waiting for (perhaps all your life): the Taj Mahal. This white marble mausoleum has a beautiful love story to accompany its legend; it was commissioned by Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz, a Persian princess, as a tribute to his enduring love for her.
We will admire this splendid example of Mughal, Persian, and Indian architectural styles both inside and out. Taking a walk through the beautiful gardens filled with flowers, fruit trees, and birds, we will of course stop at the famous love seat for that once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunity.
Lastly, after your mind has been sufficiently blown, we will head over to the tomb of Itmad-ud-Daulah, often referred to as the ‘baby Taj.’ This was the first structure of its kind (i.e., all marble) built in India and it became the inspiration for the Taj Mahal.
After a busy but awe-inspiring day, we will then return to Jaipur with memories that will last a lifetime.
