The pink city of Jaipur is a place where fairs and festivals are celebrated throughout the year with passion and gusto. The Teej Festival is one of the most popular. It is said that, after a long time apart, the Goddess Parvati reunited with Lord Shiva on the day of Teej. Those who celebrate this reunion are said to be blessed with a happy and long married life.
Your local guide will meet you in the afternoon and we will make our way over to the Tripolia Gate, where the celebrations of Teej are held. You have the option of taking a seat on the terrace of the Hindu Hotel opposite the Gate should you wish to, in order to enjoy the festivities.
The celebrations will begin around 6pm. Watch women dressed in vibrant green saris, covered with traditional Rajasthani jewelry, singing and dancing to devotional songs. Admire the intricate art of henna as women paint Mehendi (henna) patterns on each other’s hands.
And it’s not only the women in Jaipur who celebrate Teej — the entire city gets in the mood, as a grand procession works its way through the streets. Folk singers and dance troops catch the eyes and ears of visitors with their entertaining performances. Bullock carts pull cannons that sit on brightly decorated chariots, graced with antique gilt palanquins.
There are so many things to see but arguably the most impressive site of the day is the idol of Goddess Parvati, decorated by the royal Jaipur families and then carted across the city for public viewing.
If you have a sweet tooth then you will definitely want to try some of the famous delicacies that accompany the festival, such as kheer (a pudding made of boiled rice, milk, sugar and sprinkled with dry fruits) served with poori (deep-fried Indian bread) or halwa or gujiya (a sweet dumpling made with sooji or flour and stuffed with nuts). Your guide can help you find what you want here.
After the festivities are over we’ll head out for a traditional Jaipur dinner at a local restaurant and start to digest the wonderful spectacle we have just witnessed. After dinner, your guide will return you to your hotel. Don’t forget to ask about what else there is to see and do in the Pink City while you are here.
