This Luang Prabang tour is a part of the Urban Adventures Home Cooked series and aims to give you one of the richest travelling experiences you can ever have: the opportunity to enjoy a meal with a family in a local home.
Kham and her husband, own a three-bedroom cottage located among the rural villages beyond the city’s downtown. As your host, she speak English well and will help facilitate the conversation with the rest of the family. The aim is for you to experience life exactly how it is. This experience will be no different to their family having any of their local friends or relatives around. It is the chance to hang out in the kitchen and chat about your life and hers, the affairs of the day that are impacting her, and to feel for a few hours just how the locals really live.
You will be picked up from the meeting point by Thongpath (Kham's father). After a short ride in the family tuk tuk, you will stop by the local market where you’ll take a tour with Kham. She will show you around the market, and help you to pick up fresh ingredients and local products. We’ll then climb back into the tuk tuk and ride to her home compound.
Once you get settled in, you’re welcome to lend a hand in the kitchen. You’ll learn a bit about the ingredients we’re going to cook with — and because all the produce will be bought fresh from the market, the menu changes with the seasons. But don't worry, Kham always finds the best ingredients to prepare a truly great local dish!
You’ll get to participate fully in the dinner preparations, under Kham’s careful supervision. You’re free to help out as much or as little as you like, and Kham will be happy to show you the ropes!
Once the food is ready, we’ll all sit down together to share the meal and enjoy some conversation about local life in the community.
At the end of the experience, you can either arrange for a ride back into town on the family tuk-tuk (for a price of KIP 50,000, or approximately USD 6), or hire a taxi to take you directly back to your accommodation.
Kham and her family are looking forward to welcoming you in their home!
Please note that this experience is real. Our families come from all walks of life. Some are probably very similar to you and some are from poor or rural backgrounds. We encourage you to check out the photos here to make sure your expectations are correctly set about the family you will be sharing a meal with and where they live. The beauty is that everyone involved in our Home Cooked series is a wonderful person who wants to meet travellers and share this experience with them.
