Your street art tour begins in front of the magnificent Sant Francesc Church in the old town of Palma, a 13th century place of worship that had to be partly re-modelled in the 1600s after it was struck by lightning.
Together we will take a stroll through the Old Town to some lesser known parts of the capital where we’ll explore its flourishing street art scene. Here we’ll admire striking murals of floating chocolate tea cups and children playing with soap bubbles and attempt to decipher the meaning behind the politically-minded artworks that dot the streets, learning more about Spain’s complicated political and social history in the process.
You will see works by several well-known artists, including Joan Aguiló, once a guerrilla graffiti artist, who is now regularly invited by local businesses and the Spanish government to create beautiful artworks that breathe new life into urban areas. He is most famous for his joyous depictions that celebrate life, love and family but he’s also not shy in creating art with a message and a social conscience.
About halfway into your tour, we’ll make a stop at one of our favourite bars for a refreshing beer (or soft drink, depending on what you prefer) and a chat about the artwork we have seen so far.
We’ll continue to navigate the streets, spotting creative street art and finding the hidden messages behind it. The artworks in Palma tend to be on the small side due to the narrow streets, but there are some large-scale designs to be found as well, if you know where to look.
Your tour will end in the city centre, just in time for dinner! Your expert local guide will be more than happy to give you some insider dinner recommendations or alternatively, they can advise you on the easiest and quickest route back to your accommodation.
