One of the best ways to get to know a city is through its food, and Philadelphia has one of the most well-known foods in America: the Philly Cheesesteak. Why not discover what’s beyond the cheesesteak and spend a few hours tasting your way through Philadelphia’s favorite foods and markets?
Start your private tour in one of the most popular destinations for visitors and locals, alike: Reading Terminal Market. Hear about the history of this converted train station and how the market is still thriving after over 100 years of operation. Try some freshly made Amish baked goods, if you like, or simply follow your guide through the maze of stalls, shops and restaurants.
Next, head over to University City in West Philadelphia — home to the University of Pennsylvania and Drexel University. This vibrant neighborhood is home to some truly incredible food and is the heart of Philadelphia’s food truck scene. Learn about the influence of immigrants in the neighborhood and try some delicious (and student-cheap) nibbles from a truck or two.
Then you’ll head to the real South Philly! The 9th Street Italian Market is one of the most eclectic areas of the city. This vibrant and active market is the largest daily farmers' market in the country and is the heart of Philadelphia’s Italian community. Peruse vendors and shops that carry on the generations of tradition — and offer delicious food of all kinds. From butchers to cheese-mongers to oil and vinegar shops to tortillarias to coffee and chocolates, if you can’t find it on 9th Street, you aren’t looking hard enough!
Finally, you’ll make your way to try one of the main attractions for Philadelphia visitors: the Philly cheesesteak. This classic Philadelphia sandwich has been replicated all over the world, but there’s nothing like one from its hometown! Hear the real story of its invention and how this sandwich came to represent this vibrant, modern city.
When your tour is over, and after you’ve made memories that will last a lifetime, your guide will be happy to drop you off at a location of your choice. Your guide will also be happy to give you recommendations for other restaurants or attractions throughout the city.
