Culture shock rating
Worried we’re going to shock your senses? Relax! We believe part of the fun of travel is immersing yourself in the destination and its culture, meeting the people, and learning what makes the place tick. We’ve got a wide range of tours with something for everybody. The cultural shock rating ranks how different the experience is from most Western cultures. But no matter the level, don’t worry, you’ll have a local, in-the-know guide with you every step of the way.
Low
Consider these tours your 101 intro to a place. Transportation might be private or a very comfortable public option, and the activities are usually visits to iconic sites and locations that are familiar to most Western cultures – but that will still give you fantastic insight into a destination.
Medium
Expect to rough it for parts of this tour, whether that’s on a packed public bus or in a local market off the tourist trail. There might be a few language barriers or unfamiliar cultural customs, and you’ll get an experience different from what you're used to at home.
High
You're out there in the global community! We’re going to take you down streets you’d rarely explore on your own, introduce you to local customs and languages, and take you for a ride in whatever transport is available. Get ready to take it as it comes, whatever comes. There might be a shock, but oh man, it’s worth it.
Physical rating
Worried our tours are too tough? Relax! From leisurely strolls to muscle-burning treks, we’ve got a wide range of tours with something for everybody. The physical grading gives you an idea of how much huffing and puffing you can expect on the tour.
Low
Slow and steady is all you need here. These tours have very limited physical activity, such as walking relatively flat streets, sites, or markets, and climbing in and out of the transport provided.
Medium
Not too hard, not too soft, these tours are just right! You can expect a bit of physical activity, but nothing overly challenging – perhaps walking up and down hills, riding a bike for up to 30 kilometers along mostly flat terrain, or jumping in a kayak for a gentle paddle on flat water.
High
Get ready for a workout! These tours are our most challenging and involve intense walking, hiking, kayaking, swimming, or bike riding. You could be making steep climbs by foot or pedal, or working your core in the water. We recommend you have a good level of fitness to join this tour.

We’re starting on a high for our first stop — 793 metres high to be exact! Hop on the cable car with your expert local guide and zoom to the summit of the Isabel de Torres mountain. The ride itself provides you with truly astonishing views of the Atlantic Ocean and Puerto Plata City, surrounded by lush green rainforest. This is a great way to get an overview of your surroundings (and snap a few epic pictures for your Instagram account!). Upon reaching the top, we’ll take a stroll through the dreamy cloud forest pathways and spend some time exploring this beautiful national park.
There’s even a Christ the Redeemer statue up here, Rio-style, so of course we’ll stop to toast Him with a local beer, touching the clouds with your hands as they pass by from time to time.
Back on sea level, we’ll hit up one of the best and most important rum factories on the island. You’ll learn about its fascinating history and the process to make the golden nectar before tasting five of our favourite varieties. If you weren’t already, you’ll definitely be in a good mood now!
From here we will head over to the stunning La Puntilla to enjoy dramatic sea views across the Atlantic Ocean. We’ll learn about the colonial history of the island at the San Felipe Fortress and take a short walk around the harbour, enjoying views of the Isabel the Torres mountain from the ground.
After that, we’ll move on to the historic district of Puerto Plata, where you will learn about the history and architecture of the city and discover the secrets to the laidback Dominican lifestyle.
We’ll then visit the Victorian house of one of our most prominent national heroes, where you will discover local history and what life was like for families during the Republican period.
Next up is a visit to a cigar factory where you'll learn about our most prized export, the cigar. Learn how the experts plant, harvest and select the best tobacco leaves to create and roll the finest Dominican cigars. Try one (if you wish) alongside the ever-popular Dominican national drink, Mamajuana, made with spices, honey, rum and red wine. It’s very moreish, trust us!
By now you will have worked up quite an appetite so to finish your introduction to the highlights of Puerto Plata, we’re going to treat you to a delicious Dominican-style lunch at one of the most charming family-owned small restaurants in the city. So not only will you experience the cultural and historic highlights of the city, but the foodie ones too!
Your tour will end with a freshly brewed coffee at a lovely Victorian house, which is a favourite of the locals. Before you go, don’t forget to ask your local guide for more tips on what else to see, do and eat during your stay in the Dominican Republic.
