Culture shock rating
Worried we’re going to shock your senses? Relax! We believe part of the fun of travel is immersing yourself in the destination and its culture, meeting the people, and learning what makes the place tick. We’ve got a wide range of tours with something for everybody. The cultural shock rating ranks how different the experience is from most Western cultures. But no matter the level, don’t worry, you’ll have a local, in-the-know guide with you every step of the way.
Low
Consider these tours your 101 intro to a place. Transportation might be private or a very comfortable public option, and the activities are usually visits to iconic sites and locations that are familiar to most Western cultures – but that will still give you fantastic insight into a destination.
Medium
Expect to rough it for parts of this tour, whether that’s on a packed public bus or in a local market off the tourist trail. There might be a few language barriers or unfamiliar cultural customs, and you’ll get an experience different from what you're used to at home.
High
You're out there in the global community! We’re going to take you down streets you’d rarely explore on your own, introduce you to local customs and languages, and take you for a ride in whatever transport is available. Get ready to take it as it comes, whatever comes. There might be a shock, but oh man, it’s worth it.
Physical rating
Worried our tours are too tough? Relax! From leisurely strolls to muscle-burning treks, we’ve got a wide range of tours with something for everybody. The physical grading gives you an idea of how much huffing and puffing you can expect on the tour.
Low
Slow and steady is all you need here. These tours have very limited physical activity, such as walking relatively flat streets, sites, or markets, and climbing in and out of the transport provided.
Medium
Not too hard, not too soft, these tours are just right! You can expect a bit of physical activity, but nothing overly challenging – perhaps walking up and down hills, riding a bike for up to 30 kilometers along mostly flat terrain, or jumping in a kayak for a gentle paddle on flat water.
High
Get ready for a workout! These tours are our most challenging and involve intense walking, hiking, kayaking, swimming, or bike riding. You could be making steep climbs by foot or pedal, or working your core in the water. We recommend you have a good level of fitness to join this tour.

You’re going to see all the major sites of Yaoundé on this tour around town. There’s a lot packed in, but you’ll come away from the day knowing the city, its history, its culture, and even where to grab a drink with locals later on.
Once we’ve picked you up at your selected hotel, your Yaoundé tour will start with a drive over to the Independence Monument, honouring Cameroon’s independence, proclaimed in 1960. You’ll also see the City Hall garden, and we’ll take a short walk around as you learn about the administration of the region and the country of Cameroon as a whole.
After that, we’ll visit a local handicraft centre, where you’ll have the chance to shop for local designs and chat with local artists. Cameroon’s handicrafts are very rich and varied, so you’re sure to find that special souvenir from Yaoundé to take home with you or to give to a friend!
Next up, we’ll ride towards Kennedy Avenue, where you’ll get to the see the commercial activities in Yaoundé, as well as the famed bronze bust of John F. Kennedy, commissioned to honour JFK as founder of the Peace Corps. We’ll then continue on to the Reunification Monument, built as a reminder of October 1, 1960, when British Cameroon and French Cameroon joined as one. We’ll also visit Our Lady of Victories Cathedral, and you’ll spot a few administrative buildings, such as the French Embassy, national assembly, ministry of defence, and important sites such as the King Charles Atangana monument. Through all this, you’ll be able to ask questions about the country’s complicated history, and your local guide will put it all in perspective for what it means today for locals.
Finally, we’ll take a drive up Fébé Mountain, and at the top we’ll take a break for you to enjoy a spectacular view of the city. We’ll also visit the Mount Fébé Monastery and the grotto of Santa Maria. This area is rich in history and tradition for the city, as the population of Yaoundé is mostly Christian, and the grotto was a place of worship designated by the Mayor of Yaoundé in 1978. Located on the mountain, just to the side of the grotto, it is a frequently visited site for those heading up Fébé Mountain.
We’ll finish off with a ride through the Bastos and Nlongkak quarters. Bastos is the diplomatic neighbourhood of Yaoundé, where you’ll find embassies, residences of high authorities, and the headquarters for big companies. The neighbouring district of Nlongkak is a busy area and marks the crossroads of Yaoundé’s north, south, east, and west.
We know there’s a lot of info to take in on this Yaoundé tour, but don’t worry. At some point along the tour, we’ll be sure to pop into a local bar or café where you can grab a drink alongside locals and enjoy a relaxing chat with your guide. It’s the perfect time to get the answers to any questions that you might have missed earlier during the tour.
After our tour of the city, we’ll return you to your hotel, but now armed with plenty of #localsknow tips to help guide you through the rest of your stay in Cameroon!
