Brunch in Sydney is not just a meal served between breakfast and lunch, but an activity in and of itself — one that Sydneysiders take very seriously. Popular brunch spots will have people queuing for a table come the weekend. To help you get to those eggs benny faster, we’ve whittled down the ones that warrant the wait.
Bread & Circus — Alexandria
At Bread & Circus, the focus is on healthy, veg-centric dishes and the décor reflects that — pumpkins and squash line the rough wooden benches upon which smoothies, cold-pressed juices, and coffees are served. The menu changes daily depending on what has been sourced fresh at the market, but one of the staple dishes is the banana and ricotta flourless pancakes with maple syrup, lemon compound butter, caramelised banana and strawberry (as delicious as they sound). Housed in a converted warehouse, the restaurant’s fresh food and pink dishes make a interesting contrast to the raw industrial surroundings.
Reuben Hills — Surry Hills
At Reuben Hills, the Latin-infused menu is inspired by the owners’ coffee-sourcing trips through Central and South America. The all-day brunch features unusual yet tasty concoctions, including achiote pork n’ beans with soft fried egg, corn chips and chimichurri, and French toast filled with blueberry and lemon myrtle with coconut jelly and banana.
The coffee, which is roasted and also sold on site, is especially good, and tasting sessions are held in their coffee lab every Friday at 10am. The décor here is also stripped back with water served in old milk and soda bottles, adding a retro touch.
Sonoma Bakery — Alexandria, Bondi, Waterloo, Glebe, Paddington, and Woollahra
At Sonoma it is all about the bread. Whether served with eggs, cheese, or just a thick spread of avocado, the Sonoma artisan sourdough is famous throughout Sydney for a simple reason: it tastes so good. Other tempting baked goods on offer include pastries, pies, cakes, and croissants.
Situated throughout the city, the Sonoma bakeries are popular for their takeaway coffee and ready-sliced loaves, but tend to have a small number of seats for eat-in customers too. The bakery at Bondi, tucked away from the main drag, provides a peaceful respite from the tourist crowds.
The Grounds of Alexandria — Alexandria
An old pie factory in Alexandria is now the place for brunch in the city. A coffee roaster, café, garden, and market in one, The Grounds of Alexandria have all the ingredients for a great weekend.
With ample seating and a takeaway coffee station dispersed amongst the gardens and ponds, you may choose not to wait for a table in the restaurant if there is a big queue. But if you don’t mind waiting (you can put your name down and wander the grounds in the meantime), the restaurant menu is certainly worth sampling. All dishes are seasonal and tend to be sprinkled with the herbs grown in The Grounds gardens. The décor of the café reflects the venue’s industrial roots, with exposed brick, tiled tables, and cavernous ceilings. There is a drool-worthy array of bread and cakes on display at the takeaway counter and you can also watch the chefs hard at work in the kitchen — it may help you decide what to order next.
Three Blue Ducks — Bronte
At Three Blue Ducks, the eggs are just as good as the atmosphere, which is why this Bronte café is a local favourite. The combination of fine food (some of it sourced from their very own garden), friendly staff, and vibrant street art décor draws you in and ensures you want to stay.
On the brunch menu, the organic eggs, avocado, and black sausage come highly recommended, but don’t forget to save room for something tasty from the homemade bread and pastry selection. The coffee here, by Single Origin Roasters, is also organic, fair trade, and forest-friendly.
