The annual #streetfood50 Awards recognise the top street food vendors around the globe, handpicked by Urban Adventures’ own local guides-in-the-know. Local vendors Woodie and Mateo of Woodies Kitchen received top accolades from our Gran Canaria tour guides for the best street food in Gran Canaria in 2018, for their pizzas.

Pizza might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about the Canary Islands, but in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, locals know that Woodies Kitchen in Mercado Del Puerto serves up the best pies in town, along with some pretty decadent desserts. Woodie and his husband, Mateo, who is Canarian, started the bright and buzzing food stall four years ago after deciding to pick up and move to Las Palmas from Los Angeles.

The duo are always laughing and smiling with customers as they sling pizzas, pour wine and plate desserts, and are known for their friendly natures as much as for their food. If you’re wondering what to order, you can’t really go wrong with anything on offer. But the caesar pizza, topped with jalapenos, lettuce and caesar dressing, is particularly unique. All ingredients for the pizzas are purchased right in the market, be it from the butcher across the way, or the vegetable stand around the corner.
