Best Street Food in Detroit: Khana

November 29, 2019
Bob Goldsmith

Detroit’s culinary scene is on the up and up – something that becomes obvious as soon as you start digging into all the creative dishes being served all over the city. One place not to miss is Khana, for some excellent Pakistani street food. Cooking out of the kitchen of Detroit’s historical Eastern Market, Khana pops up all over Detroit at several bars and at various events in the city. Here you’ll find classic Pakistani recipes with an elevated twist, always 100 percent halal, with vegan options always available.

Maryam Khan’s family recipes are presented in a unique street food friendly form, catering to the crowds of Detroit’s exploratory food enthusiasts. Not even in business for a year, this vendor constantly surprises (in a good way) with fun, experimental dishes rooted in traditional Pakistani flavours. Think butter chicken nachos, aloo gobi burritos, chicken tikka mac & cheese, and shrimp masala sliders. Khana has also collaborated with other eateries – like Pi Sci Pizza – to create even more unique items, like the chana masala pizza. Maryam and her partner in Khana, Carlos Parisi, want to bring attention to an often overlooked cuisine by using unexpected pairings and bold flavours that hit your palate in a way that will leave you wanting more (or at least thinking about your next visit). Meat eaters and vegetarians/vegans alike will always find something tempting to try here, plated up in colourful ways and all featuring fun and creative flavours. Basically, what we’re saying is, don’t miss a visit to Khana the next time you find yourself in Detroit.
