A local’s guide to Žižkov, Prague

A local’s guide to Žižkov, Prague

No one knows local life like our guides. That’s why we’ve asked them take us around their favourite ‘hoods and offer their insider tips on seeing the city like a true local. If Žižkov sounds like your kind of place, local Prague guide Tomáš and his team can show you around the district on their neighbourhood beer and Czech tapas tour.

My favourite neighbourhood is Žižkov, sometimes nicknamed the Capital of Prague. It has lot of hidden gems and combines dirty student bars with modern residential areas. And it has so much spirit. My father studied at the University of Economics here and that’s how I first realised Žizkov exists — he shared lot of stories with me. Some bars really haven’t changed since the 1980s, which makes it a really interesting place. I have been living here for two years now.

Žižkov has so much to offer — from old churches, theatres, music clubs and specialised bars to small hidden parks, wild nightlife and students’ pubs. Žižkov has never bored me. There’s always something new behind every corner. And you can be sure whatever you find here is going to be completely different than anywhere else.

Why you should visit Žižkov

To avoid the tourist traps

Žižkov is the least touristy neighbourhood close to Prague’s city centre, so it’s a nice break away from the hordes of tourists around the major sites. Come when you’ve had enough of the crowds and are ready for a taste of local life.

To enjoy a beer in a traditional pub

There are several student bars and old, traditional-style Czech pubs in Žižkov, so it’s a great place to grab a beer and just relax with locals. The phrase ‘Jedno pivo prosim’ [yednoh pivoh proseem] means ‘one beer please’ — so keep that in mind to be immediately rewarded with a nice lager with rich foam on top!

To catch great views

Walk up to the National Monument in Vítkov to see the third-biggest bronze statue in the world, of our famous general, Jan Žižka. Perfect views of whole city of Prague included!

My top 5 things to do in Žižkov

Visit the theatre of our national fictional hero

Jára Cimrman may not be a real person but that doesn’t stop Czechs from honouring him as one of the greatest poets, playwrights, composers, philosphers, inventors, mathematicians, and more, of the 19th and 20th centuries! The character began as a symbol of the Czech people but has grown to be a frequent star of Czech folklore. At the Jára Cimrman Theatre, you can watch shows in both Czech and English, and it’s just perfect.

Party at the Palac Akropolis

The Palac Akropolis is an entertainment complex featuring a café, restaurant, bar, theatre and music club with multiple stages. Plenty of concerts and parties happen here, featuring both Czech and international bands. Stylish, with good music and good beer.

Check out the art of Žižkov tower

You can see the tower from everywhere, but it’s only when you come closer that you realise the black “dots” on it are actually statues of crawling babies — a piece of modern art by controversial Czech artist David Černý. You can check out some of his other pieces on our Bohemian Tastes and Neighbourhoods tour.

Catch the views at the National Monument in Vítkov

For a leisurely afternoon, the monument is the perfect place to go for a walk, plus it offers magnificient views.

Hang out at Bar U vystřelenýho voka

Bar U vystřelenýho voka translates as ‘The Shot-Out Eye Bar’ (yeah, that’s right), and is an old-school bar combining traditional beers, great concerts and a cool atmosphere, and is frequented by underground celebrities and local actors. You’ll love it.

How to get to Žižkov

It’s really easy to get to Žižkov. The main metro stops are on the green (A) line: Jiřího z Poděbrad and Flora. By tram you can get here by numbers 9 to Husinecká, Lipanská or Olšanské náměstí stops, or number 11 or 13 to Jiřího z Poděbrad.
