How to make spiced wine… Venetian-style

Okay, so you could say that spiced wine is the same no matter where it’s made. Take some wine, some fruit, some spices, and drink up, right? Well, not exactly. The traditional winter drink can be found throughout Europe and beyond (North and South America have variations as well), but each country puts its own twist on it, varying the types of wine, seasonings, and fruits that are used. Even within one country — like Italy — there are different takes on vin brulé, as the Italians call it, across the regions. This recipe from our team in Venice uses simple, easy-to-find ingredients to recreate the ancient drink.

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 litres of red wine
  • 1 apple
  • 1 lemon
  • 2 oranges
  • dash of nutmeg
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 10 cloves
  • 12 teaspoons of sugar

Instructions:

  • Rinse all the fruits, cut the apple into cubes, and peel the lemon and oranges.
  • Pour the wine into a big pot and add the apple cubes, lemon rinds, orange rinds, sugar, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and nutmeg.
  • Cook for 5 minutes or until the mixture starts to boil.
  • Pour into glasses and enjoy!
