Porridge is an unexpected street food hit in Copenhagen

After spending the day navigating through the copious, but profoundly spectacular, bike lanes of Copenhagen, it’s only natural to crave an easy and on-the-go bite. My search for the perfect place in this little bike city has been ongoing, but has led me to one of my favourite spots to stop for a quick and delicious meal (and without breaking the bank, as a bonus).

Creator and owner of Grød, Lasse Skjønning Andersen grew up in Sydhavnen, a rough-around-the-edges suburb of Copenhagen. He strived to show people that Sydhavnen had more to offer than its reputation and wanted to be able to give back to his community. At the same time, he sought to fill a gap in the food market and do something that no one had done before. Skjønning created Grød, the world’s first restaurant to specialise in porridge.

With its first location in Nørrebro, it has since expanded to many different locations, including the shop located at Stand A8, Linnésgade 17, 1362 København in Torvehallerne, the beautiful and renowned glass food market located just outside the main city centre. With its warm and perfectly hygge atmosphere, Grød makes an easy pit stop on your ride home from a long day at work or school.

As I’m sure many of you will agree, when I think of the perfect quick bite, I know it needs to have the ability to fill any craving I may have, from simply sweet to that well-rounded savoury bite. Luckily, Grød specialises in porridge of what seems to be every kind. There’s the traditional oat porridges, with my favourite being the Oat Porridge 1, with bits of chopped fresh apples and a caramel sauce that hits your sweet tooth with every bite. But there is also a large selection of savoury options too, for those of us who crave something a little more hearty. From beetroot risotto to daal to grøddeller (Grød’s vegetarian porridge tribute to Denmark’s traditional frikadeller), it would seem that Grød has something for everyone.

When to go: Anytime between 7:30am and 7:00pm on weekdays and 9:00am-6:00pm on weekends. Though you may have to stand in a short line, as it is a small vendor, it’s well worth the wait!

How to get there: Just park your bike out front of the glass building with big number 2s all over it and follow the glass wall on the left until you reach the stall. It’s generally buzzing with people, so you shouldn’t be able to miss it!
