You probably know all about the beach parties and wild nightlife that Goa is famous for. But there’s far more to see and do in the state than stay up ’til dawn. Here are a few things to check out while you’re here — and the best part is, none of these come with a hangover.
Besides being known as the party capital of India, Goa is also famed for being one of the best places in the country for shopping. Two of the most visited markets are the Anjuna Flea Market and Baga Night Market, both showcasing an endless array of ethnic jewels, souvenirs, printed textiles, clothes, bags, leather wear, books, and more. You can find anything and everything under the sun in these markets.
The most impressive waterfall of Goa is on the eastern border with Karnataka. After pouring across the Deccan Plateau, the headspring of the Mandovi River cascades down a vertical cliff, resulting in one of India’s prettiest waterfalls. Dive in for a swim at the foot of the falls and feel the gushing current raining down from above.
Goa boasts abundant wildlife and, in fact is one of the only places in India where you can spot crocodiles. Head out to the fishing villages and see how locals are managing to live in peace with the community’s crocs. You’ll get to see the Indian crocodile in its natural habitat, a far better experience than spotting them in a zoo.
Away from the chaos, the island of Chorao on the Mandovi River offers a much slower pace of life for locals and tourists alike. Take the ferry across from the village of Ribandar (five kilometres from Panjim) and a 30-minute ride will transport you to an enchanting land. Home to hanging mangroves and the beautiful Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, the island promises a laidback, lazy day.
Goa is not just parties and pubs — the real beauty and simplicity of Goa can be realised in the beaches located in the southern-most part of the state. South Goa is very much the rural part of hip Goa, and you’ll experience untouched beaches, villages, and local life that feels so different from what you might expect in a state known for its parties. Agonda, Colvo, Betul, and Utorda beaches are our personal favourites.
