  1. The Pont des Arts in Paris is said to the be the original love locks bridge. The tradition is for lovers to engrave their names on a padlock, lock it to the bridge, and throw the key into the Seine. But all that love comes at a price — the bridge is in such danger of collapsing under the weight that campaigns have been launched to ban the tradition.
  2. The maple leaf is a symbol of love in Japan (and China, too). It’s said the leaf gained its symbolism because the syrup is so sweet, just like love. Awww…
  3. Head to Niagara Falls, Canada, for your honeymoon and you’ll be joining a long tradition of post-nuptial visits. Niagara’s rep for newlywed bliss dates as far back as the mid-1800s (seriously!), but peaked in popularity between the 1920s and 1950s. But hey, heart-shaped hot tubs never go out of style, right?
  4. Cleopatra (full name: Cleopatra VII Philopator) was the queen of Egypt from 51 to 48 BCE (co-ruling with her brother), until she fell from power and was sent into exile.
  5. There have been Love Parades around the globe, but the first one was in Berlin, Germany. Since then, cities like Sydney, Buenos Aires, and San Francisco have put on their own versions.
