Latin America
Welcome to the jungle! From bustling markets to all-encompassing rainforests, there are enough adventures here to last a lifetime. Dive deep into Mexican Lucha Libre wrestling, learn the art of ceviche, visit the legendary Panama Canal, and see why there's more to the TJ than tequila.
From the steamy Amazon to the arid Andes, Bolivia has every climate you can imagine crammed within its borders. The country has a bit of a wild west feel to it, where adventurers go to battle "death roads" and culture seekers go to explore the indigenous cultures of Quechua, Aymará, Uru, and others, some of which are at risk of their language and heritage fading away. There's a strong independent spirit to its people and politics (check out the backwards clock in La Paz that symbolises Bolivia's desire to be different), which makes it one of the most fascinating destinations in Latin America.
No one could ever accuse Brazil of being boring! Beautiful, passionate, rhythmic, and dramatic, it's the kind of land that leaves you dizzy with so much going on, yet also eager to keep exploring. Take in the chaos at Carnaval, then unwind on a surf-swept beach. Dig into classic feijoada for dinner and wash it down with a caipirinha. Explore the corners of the Amazon jungle, then delve into the culture of Rio's favelas. With so much to see, do, eat, and drink, how are you going to cram it all in?! (Maybe with a city tour... that might help!)
If mind-blowing, eye-popping nature is your travel muse, then Chile is the destination for you. Everything from glaciers to volcanoes, deserts to mountains, are crammed into that long sliver of a country — travel the length from top to bottom and you'll have seen more climates, landscapes, and all around awesomeness than most people see on a multi-country adventure! And once you tire of all that wild beauty (as if), head to a city like Santiago to find a bohemian arts culture, historic architecture, delectable cuisine, and salsa-fuelled nightlife.
Known around the globe for its commitment to ecotourism, Costa Rica is the destination that beckons those in search of getting off the grid without leaving a footprint. It's also where to go if chocolate is your favourite treat and craft beer whets your taste buds (true story: the city of San Jose has a thriving craft beer scene). Once you arrive, it won't take you long to find your pura vida — the question is, will you be able to leave it when it's time to fly back home?
Sexy and sultry, rhythmic and romantic, Cuba is the kind of country that leaves a mark long after you leave — and in a way you might not understand. The country is far more complicated than its beachside resorts may seem, bursting with art, music, literature, culture, and plenty of political debate. Expect to be challenged, to be tempted, to be completely and hopelessly lost — and to love every second of it. (There’s a reason Hemingway couldn’t get enough of this place.) Ditch the piña coladas by the pool and dive into the real side of Cuba with a locally guided city tour.
Machu Picchu is the only reason to go to Peru, right? Wrong! Sure, the jaw-dropping site is what brings many travellers here, but it's just a piece of Peru's greatness. After you've worked off a gajillion calories hiking the Inca Trail, fly to Lima for some of the best ceviche to be found anywhere — as well as a booming culinary scene. In Cusco, fill your Instagram feed with shots of charming colonial architecture. Hug a llama in the Sacred Valley (just kidding — don't touch the wildlife, please). Sail the world's highest navigable lake in Puno. And yes, even take that back-of-the-head photo at the Sun Gate. It's practically Machu Picchu law.
