Nairobi, Kenya
Culture shock rating
Worried we’re going to shock your senses? Relax! We believe part of the fun of travel is immersing yourself in the destination and its culture, meeting the people, and learning what makes the place tick. We’ve got a wide range of tours with something for everybody. The cultural shock rating ranks how different the experience is from most Western cultures. But no matter the level, don’t worry, you’ll have a local, in-the-know guide with you every step of the way.
Low
Consider these tours your 101 intro to a place. Transportation might be private or a very comfortable public option, and the activities are usually visits to iconic sites and locations that are familiar to most Western cultures – but that will still give you fantastic insight into a destination.
Medium
Expect to rough it for parts of this tour, whether that’s on a packed public bus or in a local market off the tourist trail. There might be a few language barriers or unfamiliar cultural customs, and you’ll get an experience different from what you're used to at home.
High
You're out there in the global community! We’re going to take you down streets you’d rarely explore on your own, introduce you to local customs and languages, and take you for a ride in whatever transport is available. Get ready to take it as it comes, whatever comes. There might be a shock, but oh man, it’s worth it.
Physical rating
Worried our tours are too tough? Relax! From leisurely strolls to muscle-burning treks, we’ve got a wide range of tours with something for everybody. The physical grading gives you an idea of how much huffing and puffing you can expect on the tour.
Low
Slow and steady is all you need here. These tours have very limited physical activity, such as walking relatively flat streets, sites, or markets, and climbing in and out of the transport provided.
Medium
Not too hard, not too soft, these tours are just right! You can expect a bit of physical activity, but nothing overly challenging – perhaps walking up and down hills, riding a bike for up to 30 kilometers along mostly flat terrain, or jumping in a kayak for a gentle paddle on flat water.
High
Get ready for a workout! These tours are our most challenging and involve intense walking, hiking, kayaking, swimming, or bike riding. You could be making steep climbs by foot or pedal, or working your core in the water. We recommend you have a good level of fitness to join this tour.

Tour snapshot
Meet members of one of the most well-known surviving tribes in the world, the Maasai, and learn a quirky new skill in the process. Ever built a hut before?! Well, you will find out how to do just that on this very special tour, picking up tips from the Maasai masters themselves. You will spend the day in the beautiful Kenyan countryside, getting to know some of the friendly members of the tribe as they teach you how to build manyattas. The building of these huts is important to the continued survival of the tribe, providing homes for families and, as most are built by female members, a vital source of income for local women. A traditional lunch is included, which will offer another chance to chat to your hosts and compare life stories. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get up close and personal with a modern day tribe and should not be missed while you’re in Nairobi.

One Horizon is a non-profit organisation that aims to arm local women with the education and life skills they need to make a sustainable income and support their families. Urban Adventures is working in partnership with One Horizon to bring you this very special tour, offering you the unique opportunity to spend a day with the Maasai community. Your entire tour fee is donated to One Horizon, who will use it to purchase building materials for the tribe. A fascinating day out that also supports the locals? Sign us up please!
Your local guide will pick you up from your hotel bright and early for a scenic, hour-long journey to our destination outside the city. Along the way, we’ll see traditional tribesmen, herding their cattle through the streets of Nairobi and in the hills around the city and we’ll pass by Nairobi National Park, which is home to a who’s who of African animals — lions, giraffes, zebras and rhinos to name a few.
We will arrive in the Maasai homelands in the hills around Kiserian, a settlement in the Rift Valley Province. Your guide will make introductions between yourself and the elder Maasai women, who will be supervising the day’s events. You will also get to meet the women whose home you will be helping to build. Over a cup of delicious Kenyan tea they will share with you the story of their life and talk about what it’s like to live in a modern day tribe.
Once we’re all acquainted, it’s time to get stuck into your project for the day: building a manyatta! Firstly, you will be shown how to replicate the intricate weave that is required. Then you will be shown how to build the walls and ceiling of a mud hut. These instructions are very special as you will bear witness to the transfer of traditional home-making skills and wisdom, imparted by the elder Maasai to a younger generation of Maasai homemakers.
After a couple of hours, we’re sure you will have built up quite an appetite, so we’ll stop for a hearty lunch of local ugali, which is like a cornmeal porridge, served with fresh vegetables, water and fruit. And best of all, you will eat with your hosts, giving you more time to get to know them and find out more about their way of life and how it might compare to your own.
The afternoon continues with the building of the manyattas, punctuated with traditional songs and dances performed by the community. You will have the unique opportunity of watching some of the dances that are often only performed at special Maasai events such as births and marriages.
It is worth noting that a home like this can take up to 3 weeks to build, due to the need to wait for the materials to properly dry out but with your help this time can be reduced significantly. So you my not finish the job while you are here but you can pat yourself on the back for helping to fast track homes that help to keep Maasai families together.
You will leave your new Maasai friends behind mid-afternoon after a productive and rewarding day. Along with your guide, you’ll make the journey back to your accommodation. Before you go, don’t forget to ask him or her for tips on what else to see, do and eat during your stay in Nairobi.
