Popular with travelers for decades due to its historic, UNESCO-listed Fort and quirky, laid-back vibes, Galle is enjoying a renaissance. A new expressway has cut travel time from the capital of Colombo from 4 hours to 90 minutes, meaning you can spend more time exploring and less time on the tourist bus. The architecture with its crumbling grandeur, the city’s fascinating colonial history and of course, the unspoilt beaches are the main attractions here. This is the place to snap the world famous fishermen of Galle at work, a sight you’re likely to have seen already in many a travel magazine and blog post proclaiming something along the lines of ‘paradise on earth.’ Don’t forget to check out Galle’s scorching food scene, visit the Green Market, grab a souvenir from the city’s many quirky boutiques and be sure to catch a game of cricket if you can, the locals are mad for it!

This truly was a "Best Day Ever" experience. As advertised, this was a 4 hour 20 km bike ride past lush green rice paddies and gorgeous farms with views of interesting birds and animals, over hills, through local villages and past lovely historical homes, and to one of best Buddhist temples we had encountered. Our two good-natured guides were a pleasure to spend time with, knowledgeable about and proud of their part of the world, and constantly responsible about our safety and well-being. Along the way, we were treated to delicious local snacks and drinks. We highly recommend this wonderful way to explore the backroads of southern Sri Lanka.
